Going for an Asian-Moderne look, Atlanta's The Johnson Studio transformed the interior of this reconstructed former Midtown residence-turned-restaurant. The generous fenestration, with its views of the neighborhood's streets, admits plenty of light. Executive chef Tyson Wong Aphoso handles the culinary duties at this sexy establishment, which can be appreciated as a small-plates emporium or as a full dining venue. While we like some dishes---notably the roti (a flatbread) with yellow curry sauce and the crab cakes with a tasty mango salsa---we grumble at the fairly undistinguished spring rolls and crisp fried wontons. Better versions are found along Atlanta’s ethnic dining corridors for a lot less money. One of the best dishes is the spicy basil chicken, at a mere $12 for a generous portion. Creamy coconut-milk, not-too-hot curry sauce bathes chunks of chicken and mushrooms, the whole enriched by soft noodles. The brunch menu adapts many of the main dishes to breakfast purposes, but really, now, “curried” grits? A stretch. The wine choices seem chosen without the menu at hand, not considering whether the wines go with the food or not. And most don't. |
