Sushi King Restaurant Review: Sushi spots are a dime a dozen in the upper Kirby inner-loop neighborhood. So, what's different about Sushi King? Everything. The service, especially at the sushi bar, is friendly and attentive. The King also gets points for careful, beautiful presentations and high-quality fish. The interiors, designed by architect Kathy Heard, are sleeker and more modern than typical Japanese outlets---witness the interesting backlighting at the bars, private comfy booths and colors of warm plum and fuchsia. The delicate version of California roll will help you chill while perusing the menu. We like the tempura vegetables, a lovely combo of squash, green beans and mushrooms, all light and greaseless. Signature main dishes with a classic French touch include Chilean sea bass with orange zest and chicken pinwheel with peppercorn sauce. Nice wines by the glass along with a welcoming bar only add to the experience.
