Sushi Sasabune Restaurant Review

: At Sasabune, you can’t get it your way. Chef Seiji Kumagawa serves sushi his way and if you don’t like it, well, go to another sushi bar. What chef Kumagawa serves you, though, is undoubtedly fresh and sweet seafood, whether picked up daily at the Honoulu fish auction or flown in from Japan or elsewhere in the world. If you sit at the sushi counter, your only option is the omakase, or "trust me" menu, where you will be served one course at a time with instruction down to whether or not each piece should be dipped in soy sauce. The regular omakase menu is for less adventurous diners or more Western tastes, but if you are feeling a bit more daring, try the Japanese omakase menu instead. If you don't sit at the counter, you are welcome to order à la carte, where we recommend the marinated ikura, the monkfish liver, and even the uni, sea urchin, which in the Sasabune version earns the nickname “ice cream of the sea.” Not for everyone, Sasabune has a dedicated following among Honolulu bon vivants. If you want a good glass of wine or even a high-end saké, you might bring along a bottle.
