THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Taberna Mexicana Restaurant Review:
Taberna Mexicana is sleek in a corporate kind of way, with a huge fire pit-accented patio, a lively bar, and dramatic, free-hanging rustic doors acting as artwork throughout. The presentations are glamorous: a scallop ceviche comes marinated in passion fruit juice, sitting atop a bed of truffle-scented salt, while ahi ceviche arrives rolled in a banana leaf cone with a crispy, black pepper wafer alongside. Yet in its roots, this is true, good food, from tortilla soup stocked with plenty of pasilla chiles to thick masa rounds topped with pork carnitas served street-style with a sprinkle of white cheese. Cochinita pibil is a standout, paired with fried plantains, crema and red pickled onions, while scallops are crusted in pumpkin seeds and accented with grit-style corn purée plus huitlacoche roasted garlic sauce. For dessert, sopaipillas go modern with a bit of hibiscus syrup, brought to your table by attentive, friendly servers who can explain the ingredients. Certainly don’t miss the creative cocktails, like a mole montage of spiced rum, mole spices and ginger beer.
