Art Smith is no longer known as Oprah Winfrey’s (one-time) personal chef; rather, he has officially made a name for himself. Sure, all the media attention the tiny Gold Coast restaurant received certainly has helped, but it manages to deliver in the food department almost every time. Smith tapped into his roots for the Southern-inspired spot when culling the décor (a copper-tin ceiling, folk art, soft yellow walls) and creating the selection of comfort food that’s served. We like the amuse-bouche of deviled eggs and cheesy, warm biscuits, served fresh from the wood-burning oven. Smith’s buttermilk fried chicken with mashed potatoes is a popular option, and the Berkshire pork chop and pistachio-crusted chicken breast do quite nicely as well. Not having the fried green tomatoes with herb goat cheese, though? That’s just a mistake. Saving room for the signature hummingbird cake isn’t easy, but do try.
