Dining room at The Tasting Room, Franschhoek, south-africaThe Tasting Room is the fine dining centerpiece of Le Quartier Français, a prestigious gourmet destination in the idyllic Franschhoek wine valley outside of Cape Town, South Africa. As the restaurant's name implies, you're here for a serious epicurean affair where the food and wine of the region come together masterfully. Born and raised in The Netherlands, chef Margot Janse is passionate about taking full advantage of local products in her innovative Contemporary cuisine. Choose from her ever-changing tasting menus of five or eight courses with or without wine pairings. A meal might begin with a warm gingered oyster with carrot and bacon crumbs, and continue with Magret duck breast with black cherry quinoa, prawn and black pepper jus. Roasted wildebeest loin might be accompanied by an aubergine soufflé, butternut and tomato. Janse's food is presented artfully, and, more importantly, perfectly cooked. Desserts often incorporate herbs and spices, as in the pressed pineapple with garam masala, coconut and coriander. The wine list primarily focuses on selections from Franschhoek as well as local regions such as Paarl, Stellenbosch and Wellington. Beer, cider and a handful of classic cocktails are also available.
