| The mezze, or small plates, are the best options at Taverna Plaka. We especially like the hummus, for which you’ll be handed a bowl of seasoned garbanzo beans and a mortar and pestle with which to mash them. Also good are the grilled octopus drizzled with balsamic vinegar, the skordalia, the red pepper spread with pita points, and the dolmas (stuffed grape leaves). Among main dishes, consider the classic Greek pastitsio, rich and filling, as is the cinnamon-scented moussaka. Braised lamb shank comes on a bed of creamy tomato-laced orzo, itself worthy of main dish status. Baklava and a custard-filled pastry are the most notable finales. Greek wines rule, and there is a martini list, but in a Greek restaurant? Some categories of Greek wines are overlooked, too, such as Santorini and Moschofilero, which is disappointing. Lithe dancing ladies perk up the ambience, even on weeknights. |
