With its late-night hours, Tennessee Red's is a popular place to head for after patronizing one of the several music venues in the Central Eastside. As might be expected from its name, the restaurant's barbecue style is traditional Tennessee: cooked dry with a rub over hickory, apple and cherry woods. Expected cuts of meat --- ribs, brisket, chicken thighs --- may be dressed up at the table with three sauces, and arrive with expected sides such as collard greens and mac 'n’ cheese. Oysters and catfish offer seafood alternatives. But Tennessee Red’s is so much more than barbecue. The bustling bar scene exudes rec room charm with plenty of sports-blaring TVs, along with pool, pinball, karaoke, places to play cards and chess, and a jamming jukebox. Add strong cocktails and local microbrews galore, and this spot is a destination all on its own. Outside, a few picnic tables stand on the sidewalk for warmer days.
