Lime green walls, terra cotta cubbies showcasing bottles of top-shelf tequila, and bright folk art make Tequila Museo Mayahuel a world apart from the taquerias and burrito joints that dot the neighborhood. Rather, this is an upscale place that beckons diners to relax and experience the best of Mexican culture. Though tequila gets the billing, the food really is the star, focusing on regional south-of-the-border cuisine. As a starter, the bocaditos de Mexico, or Mexican small bites, were a good way to sample the diversity of the kitchen. Hits were the chipotle chicken tostada and the mini shrimp taco, both packing a punch considering their size, while the albondigas (smoky meatball) soup was delicate with its rich, multilayered broth. Mains include the signature chicken mole, a richly complex dish with 32 spices that are well balanced if not a bit upstaged by chocolate. Another hit was the dish of roasted pork tacos, succulent meat offset nicely by the tang of pickled red onions. Wash it all down with a watermelon margarita, or take advantage of midweek happy hour offering discounts on appetizers and drinks.
