THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Thai 2000 Restaurant Review:
Sisters Sunee Viar and Jood Frazier opened Thai 2000 in a former McDonalds off busy Shawnee Mission Parkway. Their fish cake starters are full of fresh ginger, thin-sliced green beans and just a hint of red curry paste and come with a lively dipping sauce of vinegar, cucumber and peanuts. The Thai coconut lemon grass soup, served in a volcano-shaped hot pot, is more substantial than similar versions served in other Thai restaurants. Youll pick your way through lots of lemon grass, mushrooms, chicken and sweet pepper bathed in a rich coconut milk broth. One must-try dish is the som tum green papaya salad. Green papaya is shredded and tossed with a zesty citrus dressing, chopped peanuts and itty-bitty shrimp. Order it mild unless youve a cast-iron palate. Other terrific dishes: the pad thai, the green curry with chicken, and the wonderful Thai-style pineapple fried rice. The latter is studded with peas, chicken, cashew and pineapple and served in a hollowed out pineapple half. Very pretty. For dessert, go authentic and try their house special, a traditional sweet of soupy tapioca pudding with palm seed nuts, served over ice in a water glass. Itll soothe your scorched palate.
