| Thelma Grundy's home-style cooking lures crowds of downtown politicians, police officers, students and business types. We like any meat-and-three where you can count macaroni and cheese as a vegetable (especially this custardy mac 'n' cheese). Rib tips are another treat we recommend. Go for the fried chicken, and the meatloaf (Tuesday and Friday only) is so light it practically floats off the plate. Country-fried steak is properly prepared, and comes with a creamy, light brown gravy. Both entrées are at their best nestled beside mashed potatoes and squash casserole, or smoky greens and a sweet potato soufflé so silky good it'll make you drop your cornbread. If you see the infrequently offered okra pancakes, don't miss them. Any of the desserts fill the bill, from cobbler to cake, but sweet potato pie may be our favorite. No alcohol is served, so get some sweet tea and celebrate the South. Thelma's closes at 6 p.m. |
