You can't get more spare and Spartan than Tinker's. But that's OK. The no-frills, no-fuss attitude is exactly what you'd expect from a retail fish market that also happens to serve fresh-from-the-waters lunch and dinner. For about $6 you can get a fish 'n' chips platter that's hard to beat: a mountain of crispy fries topped with fresh fried haddock. The batter is light, crunchy, and greaseless. Fried seafood perfection can also be found in whole-bellied clams, shrimp, bay scallops, sea scallops and smelts (a treat you don't often find in clam shacks). The kitchen can also prepare your fresh seafood, whether it's swordfish, salmon or cod, broiled with just a brush of oil, a sprinkle of paprika and a squeeze of lemon. The seafood platters all come with delectable fries and cole slaw. The sandwiches (clam roll, scallop roll or fish roll) all come with the same great fries. In the summer, there's no need to head for the shoreline because Tinker's will make a melt-in-your-mouth lobster roll that will have you swearing you smell the ocean. This is an utterly unpretentious place whose motto is, where the portions are bigger and the fish is fresher. Amen.
