| Managing to be both retro and futuristic, the design of Tokyo Go Go attracts huge crowds of the well-heeled out in the Mission for a night of fun. Most start with the cocktail list featuring mixes like Marko Cosmo, with blood orange vodka, and Singapore Sling, as well as martinis and lemon drops. The sushi menu is similarly laced with energy and offbeat sensibilities. Salmon and tuna tartares are served with spicy guacamole and shrimp chips. Sparkling yellowtail and sea bass are served in sushi and nigiri alongside duck and mushrooms. Hand rolls unite mouthwatering combinations of fish and vegetables. But this is not a situation of style over substance. Traditionalists will equally enjoy the fresh fish, generously portioned. They just need to steer clear of anything new and exciting and stick to ordering simple fish over rice. The jubilant atmosphere lures large groups of revelers, some of whom are not so keen on sushi. Not to worry, the kitchen stylishly puts out tasty, cooked entrées like the miso-marinated sea bass topped with an earthy sesame vinaigrette and steamed black mussels in a spicy, saké-infused broth. |
