THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Trattoria Mamma Anna Restaurant Review:
Yes, there is a Mamma Anna, Anna Minutella, and though she may smile when visiting with patrons in the dining room or on the pleasant terrace, this Sicilian-born chef takes a no-nonsense approach in the kitchen, which consistently turns out some of the best Italian fare in the crazy-for-Italian Gaslamp Quarter. We'd like her place even better if the decor were a bit more, well, decorative, but when the food arrives we focus our attention on our plates, anyway. The grilled Portobello mushrooms and eggplant filled with pinenuts and raisins make superb starters, and among the many pastas we particularly remember fresh egg pasta in a what may be the best sauce Bolognese in town. And then there are fragrant plates of osso bucco, tender proscuitto-draped pizzas, and fancy cakes cut in intimidatingly large wedges that nonetheless manage to disappear with all the rapidity of a magician's rabbit.
