ULU Ocean Grill & Sushi Lounge Restaurant Review

: 'ULU Ocean Grill & Sushi Lounge at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka'upulehu takes its name from the Hawaiian word for breadfruit, which was a staple food of the Polynesian people. Perched right on the beach, the restaurant affords fantastic ocean views. The segmented space comprises a series of rooms as well as raised patios for taking full advantage of Hawaii's beautiful climate. The kitchen has a rich bounty of ingredients to draw from as 'ULU supports more than 160 local farmers and fishermen. A morning at the resort can be made even more memorable with a cup of Kona coffee and the Paniolo Skillet with teriyaki glazed local beef, peppers, potatoes, Maui onions and two poached eggs. At dinner, guests can choose the four-course prix-fixe A Taste of 'ULU menu ($65) or order à la carte. Ahi poke is made tableside with ogo, Maui onions, white shoyu and sesame oil. Crispy local octopus "takoyaki style" and roasted beets with goat cheese are other notable starters. Continue with Kona lobster pad thai or a seafood special like shutome with bok choy and sugar snap peas. Local snapper sashimi and specialty rolls like the Hawaiian Roll are a few of the offerings from the sushi section of the menu. Complement your selections with the 'ULU Sake Experience, which includes a sampler of two sakés for $20. Executive pastry chef Melissa Logan's desserts range from soufflés (chocolate or the flavor of the evening) to lilikoi stuffed malasadas (Portuguese donuts) accompanied by a Waialua 70 percent dark chocolate milkshake. The wine list is concise and studied, and there are also island-inspired cocktails. Service leaves room for improvement.
