Va de Vi has been an East Bay stand-out since it first opened in Walnut Creek. Under the skilled tutelage of chef Kelly Degala, a Hawaiian native, the small-plates menu navigates the globe, offering such dishes as steamed duck confit with hoisin-plum sauce and Chinese-style steamed buns, Thai chicken papaya salad and potato croquettes with Serrano ham and smoked paprika aïoli. They truly are small plates: five bites each, perfect for sharing amongst two people, but not something for four to fight over. For dessert, profiteroles, mango empanadas and an impressive cheese selection are all good options. San Franciscans can check out Pres a Vi, a venture from the Va de Vi team, located in the Presidio.
