VAQUEROS IS CLOSED FOR THE SUMMER FOR RENOVATIONS. On most nights Vaqueros is abuzz with families and twenty-somethings that have stopped in for a fajita platter or a shot or two from the lengthy list of tequila brands. The fixtures and accessories---stretched-leather chairs and photos of Mexican ranch folk, all against burnished-orange walls---leave no doubt as to the kitchen's style. The flavor of smoke infuses a good many dishes, sometimes to excess. Vaqueros' most durable Tex-Mex and Southwestern creations have proven to be the moist chicken fajitas, shrimp in a crisp quesadilla wrap, surprisingly tasty lamb chops and a steak churrasco that could hold its own in much fancier surroundings. The quality of the margaritas is well above average, too.
