The Velvet Cactus Restaurant Review: The Velvet Cactus suggests a 1980s Mexican-theme restaurant that appeared on the scene a few decades too late. Although located in the Lakeview area, one of the most up-and-coming restaurant destinations in New Orleans, The Velvet Cactus has the feel of a chain restaurant, despite its not being part of any larger corporation. From the long waits for tables to the noisy atmosphere that does not allow easy conversation, to the overly sauced, under-seasoned Tex-Mex fare, The Velvet Cactus disappoints. As for desserts, lemon flan and tres leche cake are too sweet. Have a margarita and some chips at the bar and then move on for a quick dinner. Service, too, is mediocre.
