New Orleans’ Hotel InterContinental fields a restaurant that has a style firmly rooted in French-Creole standards. Shrimp rémoulade sometimes joins top-quality Nova Scotia salmon on the bill of fare. Other good options are the crab cakes, beefsteak in pepper sauce and, if the chef's in a nostalgic mood, a braised lamb shank. The Sunday jazz brunch is a must, especially during the fall before a football game at the Superdome. A strolling jazz band and multiple buffets and food stations make the brunch an affair to remember. Veranda's two dining rooms are so dissimilar that they could be mistaken for separate restaurants. One is a lofty, glass-enclosed space containing a profusion of tropical plants and lacy-iron garden furniture; the other, a cluster of smaller formal rooms, suggests some elegant antebellum Southern home. The dessert buffet is reason enough to visit this place. The wine list is thoughtfully conceived and generally complements the menu, despite not being very adventurous.
