Via Uno Cucina Italiana & Bar Restaurant Review

: Except for the mix of California locals --- from farmers who deliver produce and stay to eat to extended families arriving for late weekend lunches --- entering Via Uno is like stepping into a square of southern Italy. Décor is one of rustic brick and simple wooden tables, and the staff is almost completely comprised of the owners' relations. The menu of mama's recipes and huge point-of-pride brick oven were both brought over from the mother country. As they would at home, owners Massimo Sarubbi and Francesco D'Agostino leverage the area communities of farm and sea. Pastas and breads are crafted on site and wood-fired pizzas are staples for lunch and dinner. Fresh antipasto is piled high: burrata, prosciutto, eggplant stuffed with a gnocchi-like center. Fresh fish, like branzino alla griglia on a bed of fennel purée, offers a delicate flavor optimal to an active day, while dense, al dente pasta, such as pasta al forno, provides heartier fare. Desserts are classic Italian and the tiramisu is a stand-out. The wine list leans heavily on Italy with an array of interesting and regional choices. The Calabrian Wine Room is an enjoyable setting for a private party.
