 Temecula's South Coast Winery has stepped up the level of both food and wine in this up-and-coming corner of California's wine world. The Vineyard Rose boasts architecture with high-vaulted ceilings, elaborate woodwork and harvest colors setting the tone. Guest can relax and nibble in the bar area, stretch out in a booth or enjoy alfresco dining on the European-style veranda. Appetizers like shrimp and scallop ceviche in Key lime juice or lump crab cakes with fennel salad are the beginnings of a fine meal. Memorable entrées include lobster and baked ricotta ravioli with jumbo asparagus or Colorado lamb chops, nicely cooked with an aromatic rosemary demi-glace. Hearty portions and artistic flair cover the plates. Giant hanging flower pots and twinkle lights add to the ambience outside, but the halcyon views of the mountains, vineyard and the waterfall make for romantic dining. An extensive wines-by-the-glass list affords samplings of the local varietals. Don't miss the dessert wines, including the BlackJack port and Sweet Maggie Muscat Canelli.
