 Wasa Sushi, founded by chef James Hamamori, is a rather casual place in Newport’s upscale shopping center, The Bluffs. The crowd may be made up of Newport’s affluent at dinner and business people at lunch, but don’t expect stuffy here as there’s also a lively group of hungry sushi lovers. Hamamori doesn’t disappoint in his modern Cal-Japanese fusion fare. Start by ordering tender edamame and warm saké, or the hearty deep-fried shiitake mushrooms and a cold Kirin. Some come here just for tastes of Hamamori’s “Wasa Treasures” menu. These innovative sashimi dishes feature signature sauces such as wasabi sour cream atop delicate ahi or a ginger sauce dancing around thinly-sliced albacore. Need a little sweetness? At meal's end, the whole table can share a giant scoop of vanilla ice cream surrounded by caramel sauce and several fried crisp banana spring rolls.
