Dining room at THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Wexler's, San Francisco, CA

THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Wexler's Restaurant Review

: For diners who avoid barbecue because of the dreaded, post-meal Wet-Nap, sophisticated Wexler's with its undulating ceiling artwork is heaven sent. The restaurant's in-house smoker flavors just about everything, even the cocktails. While the menu features barbecue's mainstays such as short ribs and pork chops, chef Charlie Kleinman's creativity shines in dishes such as corn chowder with smoked-scallion chutney; smoked albacore conserva with crispy veal sweetbreads; and smoked cheddar grits with dried figs and port. Barbecued scotch eggs, wrapped in the burnt ends of short ribs, are elegant and addictive. More haute comfort sides include bite-size Gulf shrimp hush puppies that melt in the mouth like corn pudding, boosted by pickled currants, burnt honey and chili-pepper purée. An heirloom apple pie comes with aged cheddar, sherry gastrique and crème fraîche. Cocktails include the Smoked Manhattan (bourbon, smoked sweet vermouth and bitters).
