THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED The Whaling Bar at La Valencia Hotel Restaurant Review: Drift back in time at The Whaling Bar, inside La Jolla’s Pink Lady, aka La Valencia Hotel. The mood for retro dining is set with deep-red and wood décor, high-backed private booths, tableside preparations and well-trained, well-dressed waiters. We dare you to find a shrimp cocktail with larger shrimp, or paella with more seafood. For lighter lunch fare, the La Valencia salad boasts chicken and shrimp, tomato aspic and local greens. Banana nut bread and the crispy Baja-style fish tacos are also winners. For dinner, we recommend the grass-fed filet mignon and the 12-ounce, mesquite grilled rib-eye with béarnaise. Chef Sean Eastwood is gracefully retooling the menu now that he has taken the reins. No meal here is complete without the Whaler, a chocolate-y ice cream cocktail creation that could almost be a meal unto itself.
