THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Woodward Restaurant Review:
Kitschy history with a modern twist is the Woodward aesthetic. Designed by David Rockwell, who's done sets for the Oscars and "Hairspray," the atmosphere here is definitely as important as the food. A Cabinet of Curiosities houses relics like a bust of JFK, Jr., and an old-fashioned hoop skirt. There are oversize leather chairs, unusual cocktails (State St. Smash, Dedham Winter), and a roaring fireplace which seem to recall bygone days of serious revelry and hearty drinking. But the crowd is ultra-modern: Financial District suits, young lovelies with older men, scenesters clinging to the bar. The food is unadventurous but, for the most part, pleasing---flatbreads (try the duck confit version), pot roast, monkfish. The late-night menu is more unique, with offerings like house-cured pastrami and smoked salmon. Note: The noise level at night is sometimes unbearable; for a quieter meal, try breakfast or lunch.
