With its dot-com heyday long gone, XYZ is finally becoming an elegant restaurant worthy of a world-class hotel. No longer filled with attitude, the service, from the host to the waitstaff, is both welcoming and smooth. The quiet room is sleek and modern, with high-backed curved booths, whimsical portholes of colored glass, and a soaring ceiling. Chef Malachi Harland has a strong culinary foundation built at Masas, Oliveto and Charles Nob Hill. His signature hominy cakes may look out of place on the starters menu, but with hints of cumin, a dollop of crème fraîche and smoky ancho chilies they stand up just fine next to the likes of Caesar salad or oysters on the half shell. Roasted Maple Leaf duck breast arrives with a mélange of Brussels sprouts, caramelized red onions and butternut squash. A grilled rib-eye is simply adorned with roasted shallots and a potato purée. Vegetarians will appreciate the wild mushroom lasagna with a savory rosemary sauce. The well-chosen wine list offers plenty to choose from, but for a price.
