Yardbird Southern Table & Bar Restaurant Review

: Chef Clay Miller now leads the kitchen at Yardbird Southern Table & Bar and he's added some dishes but also skillfully reproduces old favorites. These include Yardbird's famous crispy-outside/juicy inside fried chicken; the half-bird comes generously accompanied by original touches: fluffy cheddar cheese waffles, hot sauce-spiked honey dip, and spiced watermelon. Considerable contemporary creativity is Yardbird's strength --- most dishes derive from Southern classics, but don't reproduce them --- so not surprisingly, much of the menu consists of small plates for those who want to try as much as possible. A standout is the fried green tomato BLT featuring tomato jam, pimiento cheese, and Tabasco-glazed Florida pork belly. Another winning item is the chicken liver toast, a smooth, sophisticated pâté thickly spread on grilled country bread and topped with sweet-sour pepper relish. With house-cured/smoked bacon and artisanal American hams incorporated in many selections, the place is paradise for pork lovers. But even vegetarians can put together satisfying meals from the large array of salads highlighting local produce, plus inventive "fixins" like corn three ways (fresh grilled corn, fried hominy, and cornbread crumbles). For dessert, lemon pie with warm blueberry compote and benne seed wafer crisps is a tart take on what is too often an over-sweetened citrus filling. The frequently-changing wine list has numerous American boutique labels, rather than a wide range of global wines, but is notable for its user-friendly categorizations.
