Chef Alexander Dixon's labor of love is a small neighborhood bistro that’s one of the trendiest cafés in the city. An ever-changing menu dabbles in fusion but favors bold strokes over fussy ingredient combinations. It may feature a pepper-encrusted pork tenderloin with Madeira mushroom cream sauce that is as seductive as silk or a wonderfully straightforward cream of garlic soup. The few times Zander falters is when things get overwrought, such as the seared ahi with black sesame seeds dressed with wasabi vinaigrette over sautéed napa cabbage. On weekends, there is live jazz, and the small space can get loud---but it only seems noisy because of the sleepy Victorian houses nearby.
