Sangiovese grapevine in the Chianti wine region of Tuscany

In Latin, the name literally means "blood of Jove," suggesting a possible ancient Roman origin. Sangiovese is a medium-bodied wine with a sometimes bitter finish and a high natural acidity, with fruity notes of strawberry, blueberry and plum, as well as spice. When aged in barrels, the wine can have an accentuated oaky and even tar-like flavor. Below are the best Sangiovese wines we've tasted, starting with our highest rated wines.
