Take one of the world’s most legendary pizza makers. Add one of his most successful students. Stir it all together in New York City. The result is Don Antonio By Starita. The lovechild of Antonio Starita, famed for his pies in Naples at his eponymous pizzeria, and Roberto Caporuscio, the pizzaiolo at the Big Apple’s acclaimed Kesté Pizza & Vino, this Hell’s Kitchen restaurant is like a pizza lover’s last wish. The menu deviates from the rigid Neapolitan lineup by offering more than just a margherita and a marinara. In fact, there are dozens of pies available: from red sauce to pizza Bianca and fried pizzas, a common Neapolitan street treat. Some favorites feature smoked buffalo mozzarella, Italian rapini, sausage and extra virgin olive oil; or 'nduja sausage, Crescenza Belgioioso, smoked mozzarella and salami. The dough is soft yet crispy and the tomato sauce is ultra-tangy, making this pizzeria a destination restaurant. To round out your meal, add salad or creamy homemade burrata. There are a handful of Italian wines on the menu, some of which are offered by the half liter, and all of which are priced slightly higher than they should be. For dessert, look for the light panna cotta.
