Inside the sleek black-and-gold dining room of Chi Dynasty, the second location in a growing chain, one finds design touches of red --- from the plates to lotus-shaped tealight holders to a textured wall of ripples --- all a tribute to China's traditional color of luck. The open kitchen turns out many of the standard Chinese dishes one would expect, but the flavors are enhanced through fresh ingredients. Start with Chinese chicken salad, a house specialty that's tossed tableside and awakens the palate with tangy notes of ginger. Barbecue ribs; lettuce cups with chicken, seafood or vegetables; and hot-and-sour soup are other traditional starters. Main courses are served family style, with large portions to encourage sharing (or bringing home leftovers). Mongolian beef is especially tender, while aromatic shrimp, mixed with garlic, ginger and scallions, delivers a spicy kick along with sweetness and crunch. Tea-smoked duck and eggplant stuffed with chicken are also popular choices. A selection of soju cocktails is offered, in addition to beer and wine.
