THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Grunauer Bistro Restaurant Review:

About the restaurant and décor: Dark wood panels and brick walls bring "Old World" charm while white tablecloths and solicitous and seasoned servers create a "civilized" atmosphere at this Upper East Side Austrian restaurant.

Likes: The rainbow trout was tender and the sautéed spinach added an element of roasted concentrated flavors to the mild fish.
Dislikes: The presentation was straightforward to the point of being bland for both the wiener schnitzel and the weisswurst. The meat was placed on the plate without thought to the arrangement on both occasions.

Food & Drinks: A well-executed menu of Austrian classics with Eastern European accents satisfies New Yorkers and expatriates alike. Appetizers like juicy grilled weisswurst served with sauerkraut and sweet mustard, and smoked rainbow trout and horseradish sauce make good beginnings. Entrées such as a classic wiener schnitzel accompanied by potatoes and a cucumber salad, and pan-seared garlic butter and lemon seasoned brook trout with roasted potatoes and sautéed garlic spinach are as good as any that can be had on this side of the Atlantic Ocean. An Austrian wine list pairs seamlessly with the menu. A sparkling Szigeti Brut Sekt is crisp and refreshing, and is seldom found elsewhere on New York City wine lists. On the red wine front, a Peter Schandl "Blaufränkisch" 2015 makes a good choice for those who want a comparably more full bodied but still fruit-driven regional selection.
