THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Mr. Cecil's California Ribs Restaurant Review:
An Asian- and Cajun-inspired California barbecue formula is said to be the secret behind the signature beef ribs and baby backs at this second---and far more elaborate---location of Mr. Cecil's from chef-owner Jonathan Burrows, a former movie industry exec who is now pursuing his true passion. The meaty, flavorful St. Louis ribs are standouts, but most everything is satisfying, including the beef ribs, tri-tips and fried catfish. Expect the usual sides of cole slaw, hush puppies and some highly respectable barbecue baked beans. Those with less hearty appetites can choose from a number of salads. The look---a Hollywood interpretation of a down-home barbecue shack with an L.A.-style exhibition kitchen---is fun and whimsical, and kids are welcomed with their own menu. This is one of those extremely rare rib joints with a solid wine list---everything from a modest Fat Bastard Shiraz (from the Rhône Valley, not Australia) to a Château Lafite Rothschild! Some soulful blues are offered on Friday and Saturday evenings. Also located at 12244 W. Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, 310-442-1550.
