Taqueria Y Fonda La Mexicana Restaurant Review:
Don’t come here expecting glamour and you won’t be disappointed; do come here expecting hearty and authentic Mexican eats, though, because you’re sure to get both at this no-frills restaurant, which looks like a real West Coast-style taqueria. The menu is loaded with hearty and adventurous Mex fare: chile ajo (pork in a dry-pepper and garlic sauce); pork, raisin and banana-stuffed peppers; and an array of tacos. Given its trappings evoking an authentic Mexican joint, the offerings don’t hold up to its brethren on the opposite coast. The chorizo overflowing from the corn tortillas isn’t as appealingly messy as it should be, and carnitas lack a definitive meaty punch. That said, this Amsterdam Avenue spot may provide a satisfactory, quick Mexican fix for Upper West Siders.
