THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Alexis Greek & Portuguese Restaurant Restaurant Review:
Alexis has been in the same location for 40 years, but like so many hidden gems in the Valley, it remains practically a secret of the locals, who congregate here to celebrate two great Mediterranean cuisines brought together by the marriage of Greek chef Alexis Kavvadias and his Portuguese wife, Fatima, also a chef. As a result, you get the best of both worlds. For a Greek experience, you can begin with specialties like taramosalata, spanakopita or stuffed grape leaves before moving on to classics like moussaka or pastitsio. For a taste of Portugal --- a cuisine largely unrepresented in L.A. --- the menu offers bacalhau (salted cod) cakes, Portuguese sausage, broiled octopus and rabbit stew. For dessert, there’s baklava from Alexis’ homeland or an almond tart from Fatima’s. The reasonably priced wine list offers labels from California, Greece and Portugal. The mural-laden, blue-and-white dining room is a lovely discovery, and the service is as warm as the Mediterranean sun.
