Altura Restaurant Review

: Altura's hallway of a space on bustling Broadway hides what is happening behind the marble counter in the open kitchen. It's where chef Nathan Lockwood prepares premium ingredients with signature precision to redefine seasonal Italian cooking. Opt for the seven-course chef's tasting menu ($123) or compose a prix-fixe meal with three, four or five courses (ranging from $63 to $83) from 20-plus possible items, deciding which will be appetizers, first courses or main courses. (À la carte is also possible, but no individual prices are indicated.) Professional waitstaff helps you navigate the menu, and portion sizes suit each course. Starters have included albacore crudo; chicory salad with Honeycrisp apples, hazelnuts and Gorgonzola; and seared foie gras with pineapple quince, huckleberries and fennel. Inventive pastas range from risotto mantecato with guanciale, pumpkin and crispy kale to pappardelle with a spicy Calabrian-style ragù of braised tripe and beef. Pan-roasted Pacific cod may be accompanied by scallops, grilled radicchio, lentils and blood oranges. Desserts, such as a chocolate-pistachio crostata, also excel. Menus may be accompanied by wine pairings that won't disappoint, or select from the fine and fairly well-priced wine list featuring Italian vintages. There are also a few craft beers and even flights of grappa.
