Salt & Straw Restaurant Review:

Kim Malek has grown Salt & Straw from a single ice cream cart to a mini-chain of scoop shops with locations in Portland, Los Angeles, San Francisco and beyond. Her cousin Tyler Malek creates inventive, "farm to cone" flavors that have included black truffle, Meyer lemon with blueberries, and goat cheese marionberry habanero. Samples of eccentric varieties --- buttered mashed potatoes and gravy might make an appearance around Thanksgiving --- may be available to sample if not necessarily plunge into for a full scoop. Guaranteed winners tend to be more conventional flavors like sea salt and caramel or chocolate gooey brownie. The siren smell of homemade waffle cones draws long lines, even on cold wet days. All of the flavors derive their intensity from carefully sourced organic ingredients and a custard with a butterfat content even higher than Ben & Jerry's. Indulge anyway. Other locations.
