Salt & Straw Restaurant Review

: Ice cream maker Tyler Malek creates flavors such as black truffle, Meyer lemon meringue pie, olive oil and burnt marmalade, and marionberry bourbon and hazelnut fudge. Samples of eccentric varieties --- sea urchin, ham, turkey with stuffing --- are always available to sample if not necessarily plunge into for a full scoop. Guaranteed winners tend to be more conventional flavors like Stumptown coffee bourbon, sea salt and caramel, chocolate brownie, or almond brittle with salted chocolate ganache. The siren smell of homemade waffle cones draws long lines, even on cold wet days. Happily, the line moves quickly, even though friendly staff will patiently allow you to taste every ice cream that tempts. All of the flavors derive their intensity from carefully sourced organic ingredients and a custard with a butterfat content even higher than Ben & Jerry's. Indulge anyway. These scoops are worth the calories.
