Beacon is the creation of Kazuto Matsusaka, whose years in California and Europe---including a starring role at Chinois on Main---have contributed to a creative fusion cuisine. This modern bistro in the historic Helms Bakery complex pioneered the Culver City culinary renaissance; its neo-industrial digs and eclectic clientele create an energized scene. The menu remains simple, along with the prices. Snack on maki rolls, the much-copied ahi tuna pizza, or addictive crispy oysters with yuzu tartar sauce before feasting on udon noodles with braised pork belly or duck confit with fingerling potatoes, frisée and grapes in a plum-ginger glaze. Finish with butterscotch pudding or a bento box of sweets for two. This is an easy place to go to catch up with a friend or to get some intriguing, satisfying food after hitting the growing number of boutiques, furniture showrooms or galleries in the area.
