| There are a lot of high-end restaurants in Santa Monica these days, but BP Oysterette is one of those places at which you can have a satisfying meal dropping by without a reservation and feasting on a stool. Tables are crammed into this narrow restaurant and the long counter facing the open kitchen is indeed one of the best places to enjoy a platter of oysters---there are many varieties offered daily---with a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc or hand-crafted beer. The sidewalk patio offers breezy views of the Pacific Ocean and the tourists wandering Ocean Avenue, as well. And while BP is on the West Coast, the menu says otherwise, with buckets of steamers, lobster rolls on soft brioche buns, and a first-rate New England clam chowder, generously studded with bacon. You’ll also find mussels in wine and garlic sauce, oysters Rockefeller, fish ‘n’ chips, and rich lobster mac ‘n’ cheese. Landlubber options include a Kobe beef dog and hanger steak in chimichurri sauce, while a rustic apple tart and Key lime pie are among the best ways to finish. The staff is friendly, the prices are moderate, and the weather is usually a good bit better than Cape Cod. |
