High-energy chef Duke LoCicero offers his “New World Italian Cuisine” at Café Giovanni. Lightly battered Oysters Giovanni, served on a plate painted with five sauces, is among his repertoire. Caesar salads come garnished with eggplant croutons. Grilled Louisiana Gulf fish is served with jumbo lump crab meat in a vermouth sauce. Fire-roasted jumbo shrimp and scallops pair with a mango-lemon citrus sauce. Still, the traditional Sicilian dishes are all here --- spaghetti Bolognese, meatballs and spaghetti, and rosemary lamb chops, to name a few. The best way to plan a Giovanni evening is to go early for happy hour at the adjacent Belli Baci lounge, and enjoy special drink prices and appetizers. On a Wednesday, Friday or Saturday evening you may have dinner to the sounds of live opera vocals. A limited but carefully chosen list of Italian reds highlights a nicely-organized wine list of mostly California labels. Before you finish your meal, remember these three words: Chocolate Lava Cake.
