| Sidewalk tables beneath a blue awning announce the presence of this charming, unexpected little café, but the interior seating is hidden way in the back of cavernous Maison Midi, one of the most intriguing home furnishing stores in L.A., stocked with everything from armoires to cappuccino cups. Vintage photos of Paris hang on the wall by the café, while oven-fresh tarts line an antique bar. A row of tightly squeezed linen-clad tables with colorfully cushioned banquettes comprises the entire restaurant. The size of the menu---upwards of 80 items---is in inverse correlation to the size of the café, but much is executed with considerable skill. Sandwiches include an authentic croque monsieur, curried egg salad with mango chutney on olive bread, and turkey meatloaf on ciabatta bread. In addition to classics like Niçoise, caprese and Caesar, there are many contemporary salads (spicy Thai chicken sausage with grilled asparagus and butter lettuce), and pastas as well. And those house-made tarts---pear-almond, apple, orange-chocolate---rival those of a good Parisian pâtisserie. Enjoy a slice with a cup of espresso while you decide which Pierre Deux fabric to buy for those pillows that need re-covering. |
