THIS ESTABLISHMENT IS CLOSED The most memorable part of an evening at Café Montrose is the space it occupies. The striking white-on-white restaurant with its towering backlit bar looks more like a Vegas ultra-lounge than a suburban storefront eatery. Popping off the white walls are vibrantly colored floral oil paintings, and tables spill out the front door to capture the pedestrian activity along downtown Montrose’s quaint Honolulu Avenue. The menu offers small plates like mac ‘n’ cheese, ceviche, tuna tacos, and onion rings that could not be saved by a pleasant red chili ranch dip. Pastas are the more reliable options here, including gnocchi in a wild mushroom pesto and rigatoni bolognese. On one visit, the leathery steak frites possessed nothing resembling the purported au poivre preparation. We recommend the owners pay more attention to the back of the house, which ultimately outweighs aesthetic considerations out front.
