THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Candelas Restaurant Review:
In an area where taco shops define Mexican cuisine, this unexpected restaurant offers an elegant, big city dining experience with plentiful European influences. Candelas is a sibling of a pair of San Diego restaurants of the same name, and here tables are dressed up with white tablecloths and illuminated by hanging artisan candles. Duck tacos make great starters, ditto on tuna tacos in Parmesan shells with tomatillo sauce. A variety of intriguing ceviches are listed on the menu, and the Caesar appears relatively traditional (it was, after all, invented south-of-the-border). Duck breast is paired with passion fruit sauce, and we were very impressed with a filet of white sea bass crusted with basil and mozzarella. A dramatically presented lobster tail, flambéed with tequila back in the kitchen, is stuffed with mushrooms and jalapeños. There is a tasty flan for dessert, as well as a lovely fig tart with almond cookie crust. You can explore wines from the Latin world, including some from Mexico’s Baja Peninsula.
