Eastside Market Restaurant Review

: A local institution since 1929, this building originally served as a bona fide market in what was then a vibrant Italian neighborhood. Now it carries on as an unpretentious deli in the finest Italian tradition, where City Hall pols and blue collar workers stand together in line for messy, overstuffed sandwiches. The specialties here are hot subs packed with roast beef, pastrami, sweet Italian sausage, or meatballs (the “DA Special” has all four meats). These subs are oozing with sauce, and the roast beef and pastrami are so wet they almost qualify as French dips. The cold hoagies are less exceptional, but more than respectable. Tuesdays and Thursdays are pasta days, when admirers of the kitchen’s lasagna show up in droves. The kitschy interior of the old building has been splashed with bright colors and Italian street scenes, while the deli cases remind us of the Market’s history.
