| One of Pasadena's most beloved Mexican restaurants, El Portal offers all the usual suspects found on most SoCal Mexican menus, plus a very nice selection of Yucatan classics like cochinita pibil (achiote-marinated pork, steamed in a banana leaf) and poc-chuc (grilled achiote-rubbed pork). Other specialties include panuchos de Yucatan (small fried tortillas with purée of black beans, grilled chicken and pickled onions), enchiladas de Jaiba (stuffed with crabs and bathed in a velvety cream sauce), and carne asada. This is a warm, cozy place with wooden bar, fireplace, and worn brick walls lined with rotating gallery-quality art. There's also a very pleasant covered patio on a quiet brick courtyard---ideal for sipping a potent tequila on a warm afternoon. |
