Farallon Restaurant Review

: Farallon is well known among the expense-account and anniversary set for its elaborate décor of undersea fantasias that change from room to room, and its cuisine has been nicely updated since its dot-com heyday. Executive chef Mark Franz builds seafood entrées that surprise: filets arrive with a spoonful of delicate foam, a colorful purée, or bathed in an aromatic broth. A dressed-up raw bar --- who doesn't find oysters ideal for a quick bite? --- provides fresh samplers from the world’s finest beds. Tasting them all is like visiting a global swath of beaches, and the signature Mariner cocktail (vodka, sherry, cucumber) provides a simple, refreshing complement. Seasonal starters and appetizers present Atlantic and Pacific seafood with a focus on local treats such as Champagne-cured Northern California sardines or house-smoked Sacramento Delta sturgeon when available. Playful, innovative desserts under famed pastry chef Emily Luchetti remain some of the best in the city.
