| This artsy little neighborhood spot at Beverly and Fairfax offers upscale comfort food and a stylish, cozy atmosphere. Local art hangs on the walls, and soul tunes fill the space between the casual conversation of regulars ranging from older Fairfax couples to grungy hipsters. Formerly the sous chef at O-Bar, chef-owner Diego Balam has a light touch and an eye for a well-crafted plate. Prince Edward Island mussels are a nice start, steamed in a spicy white wine tomato sauce ideal for sopping up with crusty bread. The mixed greens salad sounds modest, but it’s elevated by crispy bacon and onions, a poached egg, and sherry thyme vinaigrette. A dry-aged Angus burger piled with bacon and onion rings can hold its own, while sandwiches---grilled goat cheese with kalamata jam, or grilled vegetables with smoked provolone---are equal standouts. Classic comforts include barbecue pulled pork and pot roast, while the catch-of-the-day might include a butter-browned tilapia on a bed of tender braised leeks and savory tomato ragù. |
