Genwa Korean BBQ Restaurant Review: In a dimly lit space of chocolate-colored woods and slate-lined walls, Genwa’s sleek L-shaped dining room bears small bowls of banchan (miscellaneous side dishes of cooked and fermented vegetables) and platters of raw meats adorning each table. Embedded in the middle of these tables is a traditional Japanese barbecue, ready to cook the meats and vegetables. Servers are well prepared to help customers navigate the menu, operate the grill, and keep the ordering to a reasonable proportion. Though the kitchen will prepare dishes for guests, the fun is in cooking these items at the table, like spicy sam gyup sal (thinly sliced pork belly in a spicy miso marinade), or the specialty prime galbi (short ribs in a viscous secret sauce). A refreshingly cold rib-eye tartare and the nakji bibim-bap (a rice dish similar to paella with a crispy crust, calamari and chili pepper paste) are welcome textural alternatives to the DIY method. Dessert is limited to ice creams and custard, while the wine, saké and beer list is short and uninspired.
