This little gourmet grilled cheese sandwich shop in the heart of Silver Lake is sleek, modern and casual. Wood tables and mason jars with fresh flowers create a pretty atmosphere. The menu is ambitious considering its singular focus. We found the namesake version --- two-year-aged English cheddar with caramelized onion confit on sourdough --- almost too savory. Interesting cheese fusions include the “tres truffle shuffle” with Appenzeller Swiss, aged English cheddar and Point Reyes blue cheese with truffle salt. Purists will be satisfied with cheddar on white bread. There are also vegan cheese choices and gluten-free bread. Every sandwich is served with a tiny cup of tomato soup and a slightly overdressed green salad. Heywood is open until 3 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, in case of late-night munchies.
